My brain hurts!Date: 05/10/2003 I never thought I would say this, but there is such a thing as watching too many movies! I have just come back from watching four movies back to back and I have a slight headache.
If nothing else, going to the movies provides a lot of material to laugh at, even if it is unintended. For example, at the start of each preview we get a nice message from the office of film and literature classification "informing our choices". If that is so, then why can't we watch certain movies?? Shouldn't it be "making your choice!"? Like it matters these days what they rate the trailers anyway, you can go and download them off the web where there are no controls.
Speaking of trailers - can we just fast forward to next month already so I can get some closure on the Matrix! The trailer looks like we are in for some fun
1st film of today: The league of extraordinary gentlemen. I worry that either I'm easily ammused or that I have the opposite tastes to most reviews out there (actually probably a little from column a and a little from column b), I say this because apart from the last 5 minutes I really enjoyed it (nothing pisses me off more than hollywood fucking with a prefectly good ending - you will see exactly what I mean if you watch it). I liked the fact that most of the characters have flaws, there are twists (I assume this is why most reviews hated it - they had to think for a change instead of just digesting what they are told!). I would give it a 8/10, just go in and enjoy, its a good sci-fi flick nothing more, nothing less.
2nd film: Tombraider 2. Really the only thing to say is that a lot of kittens are going to die over the next few months! We have the first installment with Angelina Jolie running around in a skin tight outfit for nigh on two hours. I'm sure there was a plot in there somewhere but between the nipples and the close-ups on her lips I sorta lost track there (we also have Carrie-Anne Moss in Leather pants next month and then Kate Beckinsale in leather pants after that poor, poor kittens!!). I probably wasn't helped by the fact that whenever I saw Chris Barrie on screen I felt like yelling out "RIMMMMMER! You gimboyd". I would give this film three kittens (sacrificially that is 6/10)
3rd film: Matchstick Men. Damn! Nicolas Cage is a great actor The story was a bit slow at times but it was than made up by the cast, they made the difference to what could have been an ordinary film. For almost all of the movie you want to just put Nic's character out of his misery so I think that means that he has done a great job of bring that character to life - flaws and all (it was the same for me in 8MM). I give this film two face twitches, a clean carpet and three "HOOHAA"s (I think that is a 6 normally). The one thing that did bug me was that while Nic's character was a compulsive cleaner, why would he smoke as that would leave ash eveywhere?
4th film: 28 days later. Maybe I'm not that easy to please, or maybe I was just getting tired by this point but I didn't find this film that enjoyable. It could have been from most of the film being out of focus or unsteady (note to the director - it is a feature on most cameras these days!) While I liked some of the ideas brought up by this film, I found a lot were really dumb ideas about the way people would react as well (oh lets drive for three days to another infected city instead of heading for the hills where there aren't that many people! Hello brain, anyone home?) This would have been the worst of the movies and I give it a 5/10.
Well that pretty much wraps up what I did today but I do love where I have moved too! On the way home at nearly midnight there was still a pizza shop open and a bottle shop. This is a thousand times better than what it was like at McMahons Point! And when I moved everyone said the public transport would be worse but in fact it is also a lot better. I caught a bus home at 1am Saturday after Sara's birthday party and it drops me off about 100m from home (plus we are talking a total walking time of 10 minutes now if I catch the tram to work in the morning - instead of the previous 20)
Anyway, I'm off to bed as I have been writing this for over an hour now!
Later,
Steve
